I hear all the zink , required for racing engine cams , has been eliminated from the current oils on the market and now we have to purchase oil products like Joe Gibbs brand ($9.50 a quart )
or Brad Penn ( $5.50 a quart ) otherwise the cams can go flat. What are your opinions on this ? I just purchased a case of 20-50 Brad Penn. I wonder if there is just an additive a guy can add ?

Per that discussion I then started asking about the tranny fluid.
I guess the ticket is to go 1/2 , Motorcraft brand only ! , type "F"
and 1/2 Dextron 3.
Type "F" FOR GRIP and Dextron for the rotating assembly , bearings lubrication - ect.
Best of both worlds I guess Per Chuck Lofgren.
What are your opinions on all of this ?

In my experience I think that maybe the varnish off the wiring in the Water pump may be what you are smelling. Beware of the future of the present water pump on the car......................

Another question about oil here. The car was ran hard , this past weekend , round robin and near the end of the day my car smelt like burning paint off a new engine block or headers or something.
I couldn't pin point it but it was freaking me out. I even pulled the hood and found nothing. The electric fan was on and if you stood behind the air flow that's where I could smell it. I switched to that Brad Penn Oil and Royal Purple Tranny fluid. Some guys up near where I was said it was from my oil and the additives it contains.

I was reluctant to believe them because I have never smelt that before on my car but I also have never ran these type of particular fluids before either. Any idea's ?
Can oil stink like that ?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - Dave

thanks tony i stand corrected, api service on the containers denotes ratings sl.sm etc.as i stated most 10w40's sl might be old stock??? 15w40 shell rotella sl rating, again do your own research.SFI--that's pretty funny, must of been tired last night! and joe schmall and son, animal nutrition to engine nutrition, you guys know it all, most of my info is double and triple top secret so i will be limited on the info i can offer.

When was SFI put in charge of petroleum standards? I bet the refineries were pizzed when they learned they would need to completely retool every 5 years!

Come on Joe, it's not very nice to mislead your fellow racers with your oil BS. Fess up, you of all people know it's not the zinc that matters it's the potassium that keeps that cam well lubricated in your 360.

dave, i researched your zinc question a few years back as a friend lost a cam on the dyno related to lubrication,,, so this is what i found out after talking to tech at a major petrolium oil company,on the sfi label on the back of the containers you need to look for the sl rating(high zinc level)sm, witch is now on most 5w20,5w30,10w30,is a low zinc level, most 10w40's are sl witch is what i run in are small blocks, the camshaft in the 360 has 8 1/2 seasons on it, but do your own reseach there is usually an 800 # to call on the back of the quart!!hope this helps joe

If your in need, I am a AMSOIL Dealer...and I usually have a couple of cases of Amsoil 20-50 Race Oil and 0-30 Signature Series Oil, Trick Shift (Amsoil trans fluid), Severe Gear (Amsoil 75-90 rear end grease) and other products on hand at most events. If I know a couple of days in advance of a race I can get pretty much whatever AMSOIL carries.

The major advantage with Amsoil synthetics is the way it deals with extream heat.

I have tried most trans fluids and have never really seen a difference. The Type F is supposed to be a little "grabbier" to make up a word, but the shift doesn't feel any harder and I can't see it on the timeslip.

I try to run all synthetic trans/rear fluids to make sure they won't break down at high temps. Currently running Mobil 1 trans fluid in the dragster which is a Dextron III/Mercon type. Amsoil's trans fluid is of the Type F standard.

If you want to read up on oils, go to http://www.bobistheoilguy.com and make sure you have the next couple days free to browse the forums.

I really hate to admit this now but In the past I purchased the cheap dex 3 walmart "tech" tranny fluid. I blew some tranny's and Im not sure if the cheap tranny fluid had anything to do with it but Im spending the money on fluids this year and every year in the future.

Lofgren has some pretty sound advise as well.

Good to hear your feedback. Thanks .

Cheney Performance and Voges Engines & Cylinder Heads break all of their engines in with Brad Penn straight 30 break in oil. Then switch over to either AMSOIL or Royal Purple. As well they use the K&N or Wix oil filters.

With transmissions...I run AMSOIL Racing Transmission fluid in my Power Glide. Scott McClay told me to use a mix of 50/50 in the 3-speed for the Super Stocker.
