Posted - 02/20/2008 : 17:41:16 I see the Reserved Parking price did not go down in 2008---even though there is one Bracket Event less. But, it did remain the same I guess...$200 for no electric, $275 with electric.

Posted - 03/05/2008 : 00:00:30 Just came in from working on the race car. YAP,YAP,YAP ! I here a lot of whining going on here :) It's been a very long winter lets go racing !!! diapers for the kids or tires for the race car. Yep tires for the race car. You might be in the dog house (or divorced) But at least you will still have the racing to take your troubles away. Think about Racing 24/7 and your worldly problems go away! I probably shouldn't have had that last beer. And remember RACECAR spelled backwards is still RACECAR See ya all in the lanes. |

Posted - 03/04/2008 : 21:02:46 I'll tell you what, a couple years ago when I had to miss a race for some family thing, or go to the cabin on holiday weekends instead of Byron it damn near killed me. I would pace by the phone all weekend just waiting to hear what was going on.
This past year I only raced 4 times, and each weekend it got easier and easier to stay home.
The guy responsible for my family getting into racing might not take his car and trailer out of storage this year. Another one of my best racing friends has his car for sale and recently bought a new set of golf clubs. My dad started going less and less last year, and I don't know if he ever drove anything. One of these days my brother will want to buy a house or something, and when that happens I don't know what our operation will look like.
I will never get out completely. When the dragster sells, I plan to buy the crappiest 10-11 second no-box car I can find and a trailer. I just hope there are still races going on when I can bring it out! |

Posted - 03/04/2008 : 16:20:30 I may be complaining, but at least I'm still showing up a couple times a month.
I'm more worried about the people that you don't hear complain because they just gave up and found something else to do. If you take a good look around this area, I'd say there are about 10-15 people that are out racing every week, and those are the people that make enough money racing to support it. I'm afraid in a few years you're gonna show up at the track and there is only going to be those 15 guys!
Pretty much everyone I know is cutting back. The guys who were out 20 weeks a year are down to 15 which is ok, but it's the 100 or so guys that used to come out 5-10 a year that are going away fast. |

Posted - 03/04/2008 : 10:26:32 Hey Joe, that is a pretty good correlation!
I think the equation is:
Average Internet Forum User = Younger people = Generally making less money/purchased homes after prices went thru the roof = Less disposable income = Complaints about costs of racing
As I have posted earlier, I don't expect the tracks to make racing more affordable for me. There are some tracks that make me jealous though!
Of course, we could all just do the American thing and just fill up those credit cards to keep racing!

Posted - 03/03/2008 : 22:14:47 Maybe it's just a coincidence, and I may be wrong, but it looks to me like there is a correlation between those who GET PAID for posting on Internet forums and those who don't have the spare money to do more racing. I'm starting to believe that 'Internet Forum Poster' really isn't that great of gig anymore. OPPS, back to forum rehab for me now.
p.s. I was not compensated in any way for this post.

Posted - 03/03/2008 : 20:41:19 Does anyone have connections with the roundy round boys? I wonder how their car counts are holding up. If you think our entry fee to payout is lame, just check theirs out. Steve |

Posted - 02/27/2008 : 11:15:20 Since we are on the subject - Im another racer that would love to race every weekend and I have the motorhome ,trailer , race car and desire to go every weekend but a lack of those funds to do so. Gas is high, ras gas is higher. Add a few entry fee's and without winning the race I can not afford to go as often as I would like. I have no idea how some of these guys can go racing every weekend without winning unless they have unlimited pockets of cash. The avg. racer cannot keep up with the demands of being on your game constantly if you can only make 1 race or less a month. The more races a guy can attend the more he can stay on top of his game to stay competitive. I have to agree and can relate with Tony - Totally. Guess I better start winning. 70 Boys

Posted - 02/26/2008 : 15:24:58 Entry fees: Super Classes: $110.00 Bracket Classes: $80.00 Trophy Classes: $45.00 Jr. Dragster: $30.00 Friday Test & Tune: $55.00 Camping per Night: $10.00 (Drivers camping fee included in racer entry)
OK...while on my 72hr Internet Racer Forum Rehab program I've had time to 'crunch' A LOT of numbers. The above is from BIR's web page.
Street Trophy and Comp Trophy (sorry, I've never paid attention to this before), but $45 for a TROPHY race---are you kidding me?!?!
And my friends in the Jr. Dragsters---$30 (again for a Trophy or Savings Bond). That's a lot of rooms to clean, dishes to wash, lawns to mow, Barbie's to pick up to get the money for entry fees alone.
Test-n-Tune $55---I sure hope this year the track is well preped on Test-n-Tune days so you can actually do some testing. The two times I did it last year was 50/50---one time it was decent, the other the starting line was POOR, and I almost crashed my Super Stock Camaro. I ended up putting in back in the trailer until Saturday. If the track is going to run and promote a Test-n-Tune from 9am-5pm----be ready to run at that time. Just don't start preping the track at 9am.
So now to the Bracket and NHRA Class(es) payouts----Seems to me with ALL THE FEES to race at BIR there is NO REASON what so ever that the payouts can't be significantly increased based on our car count.
You have the $200/$275 Reserved Parking Fee (Money in the Bank), $55 Test-n-Tune (No Payout), 2 Trophy classes pay $45 (No Payout), NHRA Classes pay $110, Bracket Classes pay $80, Jr's pay $30 (No Payout)...add in a Weekend Crew pass or two, AND Camping!
It seems to me, even if your not a "racer" it would be cheaper to enter your street car in a Trophy class for the weekend than to come and show some support for a friend or family member that is racing in a particular class. Fri.-Sat Camping ($10per/day), 3-day crew ($10per/day) =$50. Trophy classes are $45 + Camping is FREE for the driver. Hell, maybe some people will realize this in 2008 and there will be 200 + Trophy cars!!!
Grrrrr----I'm headed back to Internet Racing Forum Rehab

Posted - 02/26/2008 : 15:17:10 Thanks for backing me up, Steve. I have 2 kids in daycare, which is EXACTLY that "second house payment" you mentioned. Once that is done, I suppose my wife will want to go on vacations or something.
I don't expect the tracks to change everything to suit my situation. The frustrating part is that there are tracks out there making money with programs that are fair to the racer and would encourage participation. I can read about them, but that is about it.

Posted - 02/26/2008 : 13:02:05 Tony, Thanks for giving the new forum an optimistic, positive feel!
I know exactly where you are sitting, but I wasn't smart enough to live at home as long as you and jesse. After I was done with school, before I bought a house, I could afford to waste a lot of money and travel to divisionals and such, but not now. I managed to get to all the rock falls races last year, but only because I can get there almost before my truck warms up!
My wife (I got married in november) is done with school now so that helps, but I still don't see myself being able to race a lot and also come up with enough money to get a competitive car of my own.
I'm gonna be 25 in a couple days and I can count on one hand the number of people that are out here younger than me, and I don't think there is any that could or would do it without the help of their parents.
I'd like to run cedar falls this year and the rock is too close not to go to. And I like the 3 day deals at grove creek, but you add that all up and it would cost about as much as a second house payment a month.
At least when all you old guys retire from this, there's gonna be a lot of nice cars for sale pretty cheap! |
