Anyone got a quick answer on stall speed for a torque converter?
351W at 395 ci. 506 RWHP at 7000, 475 ft/lbs tq at 5200, car weighs 2650 pounds, 4.10 gears.

I need to replace mine. Had a 5300 rpm stall, but suspect it was too much for the car since launch was around 4000.

Oh, it's a ford with a C4 trans.

I would try the guys at Midwest or Performance Converter Products in Minneapolis. 612-724-3295. Ask for Dick if he is in otherwise one of the other guys should be able to help you out.

Thanks Joe, gave Dick a call and he sounds like the guy to help me out. Wish I would have thought to ask a month ago. Won't be running the car this weekend, but should be able to be ready for Brainerd.

I am no converter expert, but if you made peak torque at 5200 RPM then a stall speed of 5300 would not be "too much" as you say. The RPM at which you launch the car won't have anything to do with the desired stall speed for best performance. For example, I often launch at 2600 RPM with a stall speed of 5700. I have always seen a looser converter be quicker and more consistent but 6500 is the highest I have gone with stall. With a 3-speed transmission you will typically want the stall speed closer to peak torque than you would with a Glide. I'd bet your 5300 stall is about what someone would recommend. Personally, with a glide, I like my stall to be 500-1000 RPM above peak torque.

There are many good companies out there but I have been happy with Transmission Specialties, B&M, and Hughes.

I took the converter and tranny into Dick at Midwest Converter. I'm pretty confident this will end the issue. He appears to be very knowledgeable and probably has more converters just sitting around in the shop than most shops ever see. He'll open it up and check it out early next week. Thanks again Joe.
